About the book:
It's a Battle of Wills ... and Love Is on the Line!
Rural switchboard operator Georgie Gail is proud of her independence in a man's world . . . which makes it twice as vexing when the telephone company sends a man to look over her shoulder.
Dashing Luke Palmer is more than he appears though. He's a Texas Ranger working undercover to infiltrate a notorious gang of train robbers. Repairing telephones and tangling with this tempestuous woman is the last thing he wants to do. But when his stakeout puts Georgie in peril, he realizes more than his job is on the line.

Review:
This was my second Deeanne Gist book, I previously read her mystery novel Beguiled and thoroughly enjoyed it. While Beguiled is very different from this novel, I was an equally great read. I wasn’t sure what to expect with this one, but I found an entertaining historical romance. Telephone party lines, town gossip, bandits stealing from the rich and giving to the poor, Gist recreates a fascinating period. I really enjoyed Georgie’s character, a switchboard operator who spends her days fielding multiple phone calls. As a switchboard operator she doesn’t have much time for anything else. She has a passion for birds, and she spends much of her free time watching and taking care of the birds in her area. As much as she loves birds, the local women love to wear birds on their hats and clothing which leaves Georgie in tears and furious. Georgie is independent and unable to hide her true emotions which causes her to be impulsive and stubborn. When Luke comes to town and begins working with Georgie they don’t immediately get along. Gist really did her research and put a lot of time into the accuracies of the storyline and it reads very well. I would have like a more details backstory to Luke, I was left a little disappointed. There really wasn’t much of a christian element to this novel, which I was okay with. It didn’t feel preachy at all. If you’re looking for a historical read with a bit of town gossip, and romance be sure to give this one a try.

ReplyDeleteI also am really interested in the premise of a telephone operator in this time period and think these books would be fun for me. Thanks for the very intriguing review! I will be looking for these!
ReplyDeleteSounds good, and especially if it is not preachy cos that is the entire reason why I stay away from books like this one
