Recommended Books (Pre Blogging)

I've always been a reader, and blogging has really influenced my reading habits. Much of my reading consists of review copies, or books that I hear about from the blogging community. I would say most of my choices when purchasing books is due to the hype from bloggers. I would really like to highlight some of my favorite books that I have read and loved before my blogging days.

The truly amazing books are those that remain with you long after you've closed the pages.

Synopsis: Seventeen-year-old Novalee is pregnant and forced to live inside a Wal-mart when her boyfriend ditches her. Novalee remains hidden until her baby decides she is ready to come. The hospitality that Novelee receives from a small town in Oklahoma is amiable. She begins to build a new life for her daughter and herself.

Thoughts: I can remember in high school when a few of my friends in english class were raving about this book. We passed this book around, praising it and excited to have one another read it. Where the Heart is by Billie Letts has remained with me long after my high school days. I've reread this book many times and would have no trouble picking it up once again.

Synopsis: When Astrid's mother murders her boyfriend and is sent to jail, Astrid really suffers from her mother's mistakes. She goes through many foster homes, and her life is literally torn apart. The relationship between Astrid and her mother is strained and difficult. Her mother is jealous of the new relationships Astrid forms and tries to manipulate her from prison.

When I read it: I read White Oleander during my CEGEP days (pre-university) and I was enrolled in the literature program. It seemed like everyone was reading this book, and I couldn't wait to get my hands on it. It really surpassed my expectations and has remained one of my favorite reads.

Synopsis: Bruno's father works in the Nazi army, and when his father is promoted by Hitler, the family quickly packs all of their things. Bruno is young and has no idea that his country is in turmoil. They move far away from any kids Bruno's age. He finally meets a young boy, but a large fence seperates the two. Bruno has no idea that his friend is actually imprisoned in a concentration camp.

Thoughts: I remember finishing the book and staring at it. I couldn't believe what I just read, and had to go back and reread the ending. I'm not normally an emotional reader, but I was so disturbed by the ending. I was shocked, stunned and heartbroken. I had no idea that the book would end the way it did.

  1. Of the three on your list I've only read White Oleander. I loved it, too.

  2. I loved Where the Heart Is, the book and movie. I was in AP english in high school so we were reading Jane Eyre and things like that and I remember one of the other english classes was reading Where the Heart Is and I was jealous, LOL. The other two I haven't read, though I've seen the movie for White Oleander (I know that's not the same though!)

  4. Hi Jennifer,

I haven't read any of your book selection, but they all sound like great reads, thanks for the recommendations.

My pre-blogging days reading, were generally a mixture of English authors writing about life on both sides of the class divide in the England of the 1800s and early 1900s, together with crime/thriller/horror books from authors such as James Herbert, Dean Koontz and Jeffrey Deaver.

I find that now I am blogging, I am starting to explore new genres and authors, particularly overseas recommendations. In some ways however, I am now more constrained because of author review requests, where a book selection is presented to you as a fait-accompli, regardless of genre and I just can't refuse the request.

    I love it all though!

    Yvonne

  7. I Loved White Oleander as well, and think that it was one of my favorite books way back. I also have a copy of The Boy in the Striped Pajamas, but to be honest, I don't know when I will read it because someone ruined the ending for me. Great post today!

    1. Oh, no! Having the ending spoiled wouldn't give you the same reaction.

  8. Almost all the books I buy now are based on blogger recommendations as well, and even before I started the blog I still had blogs I visited to help me put together a list to take to the bookstore:) Do you think you read differently now than you did before you started reviewing? Like maybe you would have reacted differently to the above had you read them post-blog? I always wonder about things like that:)

    1. Blogging has definately influenced what I read. I mostly read books for review, or books that have just been released and bloggers are raving about. It's very rare that I will read a book that was released a few years ago.

  9. I haven't read any of those books, but I saw the movies for the first and last book. I LOVED Where the Heart Is and have watched it several times over. And my brother of all people urged me to watch it!

The Boy in the Striped pajamas probably affected me most though. What a beautiful friendship that grew between the boys and how awful was what happened to them in the end. I wasn't expecting that either and it makes me wonder what the fall out was of the families afterwards.

  11. I'm the exact same way! Before I started blogging, I just found my books by browsing the bookstore and reading the backs of something and thinking, "Oh, this looks cool. I should buy it!" And I've collected way too many books I didn't enjoy that way haha x) But now, I always analyze its rating on Goodreads, skim through my friends' reviews, skim through other reviews, find out whether or not it's good or bad, and etcetera before I make a purchase. It's a long process LOL -- I just don't have a big enough wallet to buy them all! x)

And I've also picked books up on sole recommendations or really, REALLY good reviews that make it sound like the perfect book for my preferences :) Either way, I'll definitely make sure to look at your recommendations now! Thanks so much for sharing this, Mrs. Q! <3

  15. I have to agree that most books I read now are as a result of seeing a blog post. But it's good to go back and remember the pre-blogging reads. I had the same reaction when I read The Boy in the Striped Pajamas.
