Synopsis:
Lake Warren is an independent, self sufficient woman working as a marketing consultant for a fertility centre. Her husband has decided he no longer loves her, he's moving forward with a divorce and has decided to sue for full custody. Lake has come to the conclusion that the old Jack is gone, and she can no longer trust or expect anything from the new Jack. In the meantime, she's laying low and concentrating on work. She's taking the advice of her attorney Robert Kotchkiss. Who knew, one small misjudgment could turn her life upside down. Lake accepts a dinner invitation for a casual work celebration for a colleague who has recently decided to join the clinic. Lake, feeling sexy for the first time in a long time, with her kids away at campy, decides to accept Dr. Keaton's offer to go back to his penthouse with him. After being intimate with him, she awakens to find him dead, and someone in this bathroom. She immediately runs out of this complex and misdials 911. After some consideration, she remembers the custody battle and her attorney's advice. Afraid, the police would accuse her of his murder, she determines it is best to remain silent. Lake is confident that no one saw her arriving at his apartment. Her fingerprints will not show up in their database, and they cannot fingerprint her until they are issued an warrant which they cannot obtain until she becomes a suspect. The police are not her only unexpected visitors. The killer begins to target her. Lake can not go to the authorities and she cannot let her husband know she is in danger. Lake must deal with this all on her own, unexpectedly uncovering dirty secrets within the fertility centre and afraid for her life.
Overall Impression:
Hush was an amazing thriller! Cosmopolitan's editor-in-chief kept me glued to the book. I don't normally read mystery-thrillers but this book opened my eyes. The identity of the killer was a huge surprise, and all the characters were written very well. The characters were very well developed and plausible. I highly recommend this book! A great stand-alone novel. Even for those who are not mystery/thriller readers. Give it a try, I loved it!! I'm really going to look into some of her other books.

ReplyDeleteAlthough the plot is hardly original, White does a capable job of generating enough suspense to keep us turning the pages. In addition, she makes us care about Lake's predicament, insuring that we will stick around to see how she extricates herself from this gigantic mess. "Hush" is a quick, painless, and undemanding read, perfect for an afternoon or two of escapist pleasure.
